Fiddle-footed

Before heading north from Stuart, I took advantage of being west of the coast, and while not on the "official" Florida Cracker Trail, I did get a taste of Old Florida. My motivation was to ride a portion of the 110-mile cycling trail around Lake Okeechobee! It was quite enjoyable, and along the way, I made a stop in Indiantown, a rural spot of about 6,000 people. Once a Seminole trading post, then a boomtown in the '20s with the railway, today it relies heavily on seasonal agriculture. Most people simply pass through as it's merely 37 miles from West Palm Beach -- two very different worlds.

From here, I headed northeast as the weather has warmed, and I've been enjoying Sebastian and the Inlet for two weeks. I returned to an AirBnB in town, then put up the homestead at my favorite Florida camping spot. I'm already in coastal lackadaisical mode with three, yes, three more weeks in Sebastian on the calendar. While life here seems quite familiar, I'm meeting new faces and discovering new adventures. Stay tuned.

Judy: The one thing I miss the most is the sight and sounds of the sea. Pity most of our coastline so overbuilt. Love photos of all the out of the way places you discover.

Eileen: Perhaps you can go for a scenic long weekend to the rocky Maine coast for a visit before the summer crowds gather. Yes, the retirement gated communities of elders have surely killed the East Coast. There isn't a spot on my "I might live here" list after traveling from Maryland to Florida. Scary.

Hey J... Did you get a new tent? And finally catching up on my blog reading. Love your photos. That bike stretch on the lake looks really inviting. If only I was a bike/camper. And super curious about Indiantown. Have to read about it. Where do you head next?

Barb,
Not a new tent; in fact it's nearly a year old and was purchased in a panic last March when in Palm Coast. Yes, I did enjoy the Lake route and may some day do it all. One overnight should be sufficient! Staying in Sebastian till March 11th then begin heading a bit further north but coastal. I'll be in Florida till 3/27 but not sure where I sleep from 3/18 onward just yet! Moving slowly this season; really getting relaxed about this travel thing :). j.

J.. so in reading about Indiantown, discovered Davey Jones, Monkees, died there. Or close to there. Remember when I was 10 and just on the edge of my rebel days, my my mom gave me a 45 vinyl of "I'm a Believer," which I was pretty in love with at the time. The things we remember, right? Good to relax and not let the itinerary rule. But where to on 3/27?

Barb: So first off, did you think love was only true in fairy tales?
Indeed, what is stuck in our brains is often frightening and funny!
Love how Davey Jones came to the forefront -- yes, lived and died in Stuart, FL just east of Indiantown though they are different worlds.
Where on 3/27? Alabama! Part of a larger picture fro 2018 that is still to be planned. Must find bed for 3/18 still! J.

Hi Judy:

No matter where you stay it's always a pleasure to follow your travels. Did you actually stay at the Seminole Inn? Inn looks beautiful as well as the beach and gorgeous sunset.
The Crackers Café is too funny.

Claudette, I did NOT stay at the Inn; was camping about 15 or so miles East of Indiantown. In fact, I found 2 new tent sites nearby this year so I expect I may be back to the area next winter. Not in a rush to leave warm weather but ready to venture out of Florida at month's end. J.
