Adventure Cyclist, Bike/Ped Advocate, Avid Reader and Nomad
Pie lover, too!
There is so much to do besides work, and I'm not referring to the infinite "to do list". No, it's the more important elements that fill our days, weeks and years with interesting people and memorable experiences.
Ride Judy Ride!
I bought my first bicycle at 29. It was an affordable Schwinn that took me through the streets of Boston, along the Charles River pathway, and into the seaside towns of the North Shore. I loved it but I had no idea that this small investment would be a life-changer.
Since my first 11-mile ride, cycling has become my oxygen. Whether I'm riding to clear my head during the work day, joining friends at fundraising events, or spending vacations discovering new places, I can't imagine life without a bicycle. My 2-wheel travels have taken me to Austin, Key Largo, Philly, and the 5 boroughs of New York; across Oregon, Maryland and Montana; following the Tour de France, and touring Amsterdam to Gent. On week-long tours from Pittsburgh to DC then Annapolis to Hilton Head, I learned quite a bit about self-sufficiency, mother nature, minimalism, friends & family, good food, the kindness of strangers, and mind over matter!
The world is different from the seat of a bike. I encourage you to take a spin!
Cause a Public Stir
I really don't enjoy "flying the friendly skies" or "seeing the USA in a Chevrolet" though I do really love riding trains. While I will save my soapbox for another time and place, suffice to say that I will never accept that the U. S. needs to lag behind other nations in embracing bikes and feet as forms of transportation.
During the past decade or more, I've put quite a bit of energy into "the cause". From 2008-2010, I served as an appointed member of The Maryland Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and among other projects, I researched and wrote the Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan for the Town of Easton, Maryland. While living in Florida, I founded The Delray Beach Bicycle Club, and actively engaged with two advocacy coalitions. There's more, but what I've learned is that government bureaucracy is alive and well.
That said, I hope to see the trend of less driving flourish, and with it, an impact on our transportation policies. Today, I advocate by doing, while encouraging and supporting friends to transform their lives by walking and cycling.
Sit, Read, Relax
As a lifelong book lover, I still find paper endearing and stock my shelves with books I may never read again. But it wasn't until 2002 that I learned that books are meant to be shared and discussed. This is when I joined the Delray Beach Library Book Group, a formal gathering of inquisitive reading fanatics like me. Now, flash forward a few years and many miles to Easton, Maryland, where I founded and led the Talbot County Library Evening Book Group. It's here that I learned that while books may offer unique insights into life, book discussions with intelligent, perceptive people are a lifeline to enriching my world.
So what else could I revel about? Meditating, speaking French, learning to play the flute, and what about the nomad thing? 2013 was the start and the travel adventures are in full swing!
