An hour drive toward Albany brought me to friends in Guilderland, NY who welcomed me back for a few days. I actually stopped along the way to cycle along the Mohawk-Hudson Bike Trail, an enjoyable journey I'd taken two years ago. It was a quick stop to catch up with kind folks, eat some good meals, relax on the patio, and get ready to return to the outdoor life. A few hours west and I was nearby Ithaca, NY, though I didn't visit the city as Treman State Park was so delightful all week long. Fall colors have yet to appear, though I had a few nights in the 40's as well as an evening of torrential rain & thunderstorms before summer weather returned. Still, no disappointment at all with living outdoors. The Park is named for a fomer Ithaca merchant, financier and philanthropist. A native New Yorker, Treman attended Cornell and was instrumental in establishing several state parks in this Finger Lake region by gifting land. For more than a century, the upper park area was a hamlet known as Enfield Falls, and since 1998 Cornell archeologists have been "unearthing its history". The present mill remaining serves as a museum of these findings, as well as honoring the Civilian Conservation Corps who did the beautiful stone masonry throughout the park in the 1930s. While I hiked just two of the three trails, there were repeat visits to enjoy the rugged gorge, wooded trails, and stunning waterfalls.
